How to Break Big Goals Into Daily Study Blocks (The System That Actually Works)
Big goals fail because they stay big. The fix: goal → blocks → daily plans → check-ins. How to pace a deadline with math instead of motivation, and a free tool that does it for you.
Every student has set a big goal and abandoned it by Thursday. Not because the goal was wrong — because the goal never became a system.
Why big goals fail
A goal like "study for my chem final" has three structural problems:
- No pace. "Study more" has no daily quota, so every day feels optional until panic week.
- No progress signal. You can't see 30% done vs 10% done, so your brain treats it as infinite.
- No recovery path. Miss two days and the goal feels broken, so you abandon it instead of shrinking it.
The fix: goals → blocks → daily plans → check-ins
Step 1: Define the goal with a deadline. "Chem final, June 12." A goal without a date is a wish.
Step 2: Convert it to blocks. Estimate the work in focus sessions: ~20 blocks of 30 minutes. Now the goal is countable — 0/20 done.
Step 3: Let deadline math set the pace. 20 blocks, 10 days out = 2 blocks/day. This is the whole trick: pace comes from arithmetic, not from motivation. If you can only do 1 block today, you know you're borrowing from tomorrow.
Step 4: Daily plans execute the pace. Each day's plan should advance the goal — weakest topic first when energy is high, review blocks when it's low.
Step 5: A check-in closes the loop. "Did yesterday happen?" If missed, the plan shrinks — smaller is strategy, not weakness.
The math most students get wrong
| Situation | Wrong move | Right move |
|---|---|---|
| Behind pace by 4 blocks | Panic-cram 8 blocks tomorrow | Add 1 block/day for 4 days |
| 80% done, deadline in 2 days | Start something new | Finish — completion momentum is real |
| No deadline | "I'll do it eventually" | Give it one: even fake deadlines pace the work |
| Missed 3 days | Abandon the goal | Recalculate pace and continue |
How Locked In automates this
This system is exactly what the Goals feature does:
- Add a goal with a deadline and estimated size in the sidebar
- Every daily plan the AI builds works toward your most urgent goal — it knows you're "24/40 blocks done, 9 days out" and paces accordingly
- Marking a plan done advances the counter automatically
- The main screen greets you with the goal that needs you most: "Chem final due in 2 days — 6 blocks left"
- The next-day check-in reshapes plans around what actually got done
No spreadsheets, no weekly reviews you'll skip. The math runs itself.
One warning
Goals work when they're countable. "Get better at math" can't be broken into blocks. "Finish 20 practice papers before June 12" can. If you can't estimate the blocks, sharpen the goal first.
